The Sorcerer’s Apprentice… What is it Really Based On?

Sometimes Disney releases live action movies that are based on the same source material as something they already covered in an animated film. For example, in 1994 Disney released a live action version of the Jungle Book that was completely different than the animated film. But even so, they managed to fit in a line about “the bare (bear) necessities.”

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, the live action film that was released in 2010, is a little unique in this category. Its inspiration was undoubtedly the Disney segment in Fantasia… the original song and poem just aren’t popular enough by today’s standards to provide the inspiration for a blockbuster film. This presents a rather interesting scenario. Does this mean that the 2010 film is based on the animated segment, which in turn is based on Dukas’s song, which is based on Goethe’s poem? That’s quite the chain!

The broom scene can’t really be said to be a nod to the Fantasia segment because the incident is also the core of the song and poem. But hat at the end of the credits looks suspiciously like Yen Sid’s hat. If there’s a sequel, perhaps it will have more references to the Fantasia sequence.
