Source Material of Dumbo

The story for Dumbo came originally from a toy called a “Roll-A-Book.” It was a device that would display different pictures as knobs on the side were turned, showing images to tell a story. The story was called “Dumbo the Flying Elephant” and is credited to Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl, author and illustrator (respectively). Disney acquired the rights to the film within months of its release, making Dumbo the first Disney film based on contemporary material. While the Roll-A-Book version definitely predates the Disney film, not very much is actually known about it as no copies are known to exist.

A great resource for the mysterious Dumbo Roll-A-Book can be found at Michael Barrier’s site.
