Elephants and Mice

Fear of mice is known as musophobia. The belief that elephants are afraid of mice dates back to at least the 1st century, when the Roman Pliny the Elder wrote his Naturalis Historia. In it, he suggests that elephants have an aversion more to rodents than any other creature. While this is considered a folk belief more than anything, the television program Mythbusters did demonstrate than an elephant attempted to avoid a mouse. It is suggested that the actual reason an elephant would be afraid of a mouse is because it would try to avoid something it can hear but not see well. Hence, an elephant would just as likely avoid any small creature.
