Time and Place of Pinocchio

Pinocchio doesn’t require nearly as much guesswork as Snow White did to place it, primarily because the source material is a book rather than a folktale. Carlo Collodi, the author, lived and died in Florence, Italy. The subject of his book also seems to take place in the surrounding area, known as Tuscany. In fact, the word “Pinocchio” comes from the Florentine dialect. Furthermore, Collodi began writing the book in 1880. There seems to be little reason not to place the time of the book in the same year.

I tried to see if there was anything indicating that Disney’s version had varied from this, but it would appear not. There is, however, a blatant anachronism in that the Mona Lisa was not in Italy but France in 1880—and had been for hundreds of years.
